How We Learn

Montessori philosophy and nature, woven together, and the CBC curriculum in our primary section.

The Montessori Way

Child-led, self-motivated learning

Montessori is an education philosophy and practice that is child-led and fosters self-motivated growth in every area of a child's development. It stems from a deep respect for children, the concept of “following the child.”

This means respecting the uniqueness of every child: their freedom to choose, to move, to correct their own mistakes, and to work at their own pace. Our classrooms are spacious and comfortable, with low shelves and child-friendly furniture to suit the many learning needs of the children in them.

Our base curriculum

The five Montessori areas of learning

For Early Years and basic elementary.

Practical Life

Everyday-living exercises, care of self and environment, grace and courtesy, that build independence, concentration and fine motor skills, preparing the child for all other areas.

Sensorial

Exploring the five senses, height, width, aroma, taste, weight, texture, temperature, colour and sound, sharpening the abilities needed for reading, writing and maths.

Numeracy

Hands-on maths with rods, beads, spindles, cubes and counters, moving gradually from concrete quantities to written numbers and abstract thinking.

Literacy

Daily story time and singing introduce new sounds and contexts. Writing comes before reading, with a heavy emphasis on phonics and tactile language materials.

Knowledge of the World

Geography, science, history, music and art, children learn about the earth from whole to parts, respond to diversity with respect, and develop awareness of sustainability.

Nature, woven in

Throughout it all, learning is intertwined with nature, our farm, gardens and outdoor spaces are part of the everyday.

Primary Section

The Competency-Based Curriculum

Our primary section (Grade 1 & 2) uses Kenya's CBC, focusing on real-world application, critical thinking, problem-solving and holistic development. It emphasises inquiry-based learning, encouraging learners to ask questions, investigate, and explore topics in depth through practical participation.

Alongside these, we promote excellent reading and writing, deep subject mastery, mathematical fluency, intellectual curiosity, and strong character, leadership, diligence and moral integrity.

Every child, welcome

Learning that meets each child where they are

Because we follow the child, every learner is met at their own pace and supported as an individual, in a warm, inclusive setting where they feel loved, respected and free to grow.
